Wall thickness is the whole difference
Vinyl gets judged on the worst examples of it — thin extrusions that yellow, go brittle and crack the first time somebody leans a ladder on them. The material is not the problem; wall thickness and UV package are. Heavy-wall profiles with a proper titanium-dioxide UV inhibitor hold colour in LA sun for decades.
The second half is the post. Vinyl posts are hollow, and on any run over about 5′ or anywhere exposed to wind, they get a galvanised steel insert. Without it the post flexes, the rails work loose at the sockets, and the run develops a wave.
Profiles we install
Solid tongue-and-groove panels, no sight line. The most wind-loaded profile, so posts and footings get upsized on exposed runs.
Spaced boards or a lattice top. Lets wind through, which matters on a ridge, and reads far less like a wall from the street.
Open spaced pickets for a front boundary. Defines the line without blocking the garden or the light.
Two or three horizontal rails for long runs and large lots. Cheapest per foot by a distance where you only need a boundary.

What decides the detail
A solid vinyl panel is a sail. On exposed lots we upsize posts and footings or move you to a semi-privacy profile that lets air through.
Dark vinyl absorbs heat and can distort on a west elevation in an LA summer. We steer dark colours toward shaded runs and use woodgrain finishes carefully.
Individual panels and rails unclip and swap out. A damaged bay is a same-day fix, which is the strongest practical argument for vinyl.
Questions we get asked
Is a vinyl fence worth it in a high-wind area?
Only with the right profile and reinforcement. A solid privacy panel is a sail — on an exposed ridge we either upsize posts and footings, or move you to a semi-privacy profile that lets air through. Thin-wall vinyl on unreinforced posts in wind is how vinyl earned its bad name.
How does vinyl compare to wood on cost?
Vinyl costs more than cedar up front and roughly matches redwood, then costs almost nothing to maintain — no staining, no sealing, no re-coating every two years. Over fifteen years it usually comes out ahead of any wood except where you would have let the wood weather untreated anyway.
Will vinyl fade or go yellow?
Cheap extrusions do. Heavy-wall profiles with a titanium-dioxide UV package hold colour for decades in LA sun and carry a manufacturer warranty against yellowing. We only quote the latter, which is why our vinyl number is higher than the cheapest one you will get.
Can vinyl be used as a pool fence?
Yes, in a code-compliant configuration: correct height, no climbable horizontal on the inside face, and a self-closing self-latching gate with the latch at the mandated height. We design the barrier to pass inspection rather than adjusting it afterwards.
